EDITORIAL: ZIFA are sabotaging the Warriors again

LINCOLN Mutasa and his blundering team at ZIFA are at it again.

We thought they had learnt anything from the chaos which blighted our Warriors shoddy preparations for the two World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa in South Africa this month.

We thought they heard the fierce criticism, which they received, and they will use it to do better, when it comes to the Warriors, in the team’s next assignments.

We lost to Lesotho, not because the Crocodiles were better than us, but because they were prepared better than us for that World Cup qualifier.

That we had the better players was there for everyone to see but football is a team game and those who have the better team, and not the better players, are always likely to win.

It’s just like cricket, rugby or basketball, it’s the side which has the best team, and not the best players, which is always likely to win.

We lost to Lesotho because we had a new coach, who was untested at this level of football, who was thrown into the fray at the last minute because ZIFA couldn’t get the man they really wanted.

Now, just a week after that disaster in South Africa, we find ourselves facing the same challenges which affected our preparations for those two World Cup qualifiers.

As of Tuesday, the Warriors squad for the COSAFA Cup had not yet been named when Bafana Bafana named their provisional squad six days ago.

Bafana Bafana assistant coach, Helman Mkhalele, who will be in charge of the team at the COSAFA Cup, named a 45-man preliminary squad for the tournament.

He named a number of young DStv Premiership stars as Bafana Bafana want to use this tournament to prepare for their future.

You can see that Bafana Bafana are run by an association which has vision and, unfortunately, we cannot say the same about our ZIFA.

If you ask Mutasa as to what we want to achieve from the COSAFA Cup, as a nation, you are unlikely to get an answer that will give you the assurance there is hope for the future of our national game.

You look at the squad, which had been chosen by ZIFA, which included some players who were 30 years, and you ask yourself what really is going on at the association?

One would have thought that ZIFA will provide a clear message that only players, who are under the age of 23, will be considered for the regional tournament.

That would make sense because we would be using this tournament to look into our future and, in such a scenario, we would not worry too much about the results.

Focus would be on the investment into our future.

That is what Bafana Bafana are doing.

And, you can understand why they have been performing better than us when it comes to the international football scene.
