Wicknell Chivayo’s Intratek And ZPC In Talks To Revive Controversial Gwanda Solar Project

Sir Wicknell Chivayo’s company Intratek and the Zimbabwe Power Company are set to revive the controversial Gwanda Solar project.

The 100MW Gwwanda solar project was stopped after Chivayo’s Intratek failed to deliver the targets they had promised after $5 million had already been paid to his company.

The ZPC director told the parliamentary portfolio committee for energy and mines that they were in talks with Intratek to revive the project. In 2015, Intratek received a $200 million tender for solar projects from ZPC.

ZPC was forced to cancel the contract after the company failed to do the site clearance and feasibility studies, for which they were paid the initial $5 million. The Power company was forced to report the company for fraud and had been in court over the case.

Recently, Intratek was acquitted of all charges after the courts ruled that the contract was still valid. They asked ZPC to carry on with their contractual obligations to the company.

Mataruse shared that the Supreme Court ordered ZPC to continue with the contract they signed with Wicknell’s Intratek in 2015 and that they will do just that.

How the initial $ 5 million was spent by Intratek

ZPC lawyer Tungamira Chinhengo shared that the money paid to Intratek was used to start the project. However,  much of it was wasted clearing the land. He said:

The parties are currently engaging each other with a view to resuming works at the Gwanda Solar Project. However, I want to clarify a position which has been misinterpreted about the US$22 million damages. The issue of damages has never been ordered by any court in respect of this. The High Court and Supreme Court never ordered anything in respect of damages to Intratek.
