Thirty-four-year-old Felix Tagonera, who resides in Hatcliffe Extension, Harare, ran out of luck and was nabbed recently. He made his initial appearance at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts, where he was charged with impersonation. The magistrate granted him US$100, and he will return to court on 13 May for the commencement of his trial.
Just last year, social media was grappling with one South African TikTok influencer, Dr Matthew Lani. Dr Lani would post videos giving medical advice and videos pretending to be on night calls at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg. He would walk in the corridors live on TikTok with a stethoscope over his neck. He was later busted and exposed to be a phony.
How One Fake Gynaecologist Was Caught At Parirenyatwa Hospital
One notorious Zimbabwean took notes and had the guts to try it at Zimbabwe’s biggest referral hospital.
On 15 April, Felix Tagonera got a stethoscope, draped it over his neck and started pacing up and down Parirenyatwa Hospital. He rocked a sleek black slim-fit suit, an orange shirt and a tie to look the part.
However, his walks were too aimless and unsophisticated that he spooked actual hospital staff.
The State prosecution told the Magistrates’ Court that Julia Shambare, who was on duty at Parirenyatwa Hospital, noticed Felix and his funny movements. She then suspected that he was a fake doctor and alerted her colleague, Alexander Munera, who caught him.
The hospital’s security dragged Felix to the ZRP Parirenyatwa Post, where police officers combed him and found a stethoscope, four business cards with two inscribed Andy Mapulanga from Andy Deon Medical Centre and Msasa Park Family Healthy Services, saying he was a gynaecologist. Police also found a photocopy of a certificate belonging to one Charity Mungoda.
