CHEVRONS DETROY MOZAMBIQUE

A GREAT opening spell of bowling by Richard Ngarava shattered Mozambique’s top order and paved the way for another fine victory for Zimbabwe at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B in Nairobi yesterday morning.

Zimbabwe put Mozambique in to bat on winning the toss and after three overs had reduced their opponents to eight runs for three wickets, all of them to Ngarava – two bowled and the other one lbw.

Vieira Tembo (10) and Agostinho Navicha (14) effected a small recovery, taking the score to 24 before Tembo became Ngarava’s fourth victim, also bowled out.

They were the only batters to reach double figures as Blessing Muzarabani tore apart the middle order, and the innings closed for 56 all out in 13.1 overs.

Ngarava’s four top-order wickets cost him 16 runs in his four overs, while Muzarabani had three for eight and Sikandar Raza two for 10.

This is the lowest total ever recorded against Zimbabwe in a T20 international match, the previous record being 71 by Rwanda at Windhoek in November 2023.

It took Zimbabwe only five overs to reach their victory target.

Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani again opened the batting, and this time it was Bennett who hogged the bowling from his partner.

After a wide, he hit another 15 runs off the opening over, and scored 31 out of 42 in only four overs, facing 19 balls himself before he was caught.

Marumani finished with 10 not out off eight balls, while Dion Myers hit two successive fours to win the match.   Zimbabwe’s next opponents will be Rwanda tomorrow, starting at 12.50 pm.

Brief score

Mozambique – 56 all out in 13.1 overs (Agostinho Navicha 14, Vieira Tembo 10, Jose Joao 9; Richard Ngarava 4/16, Blessing Muzarabani 3/8, Sikandar Raza 2/10)

Zimbabwe 57-1 in 5 overs (Brian Bennett 31, Tadiwanashe Marumani 10*, Dion Myers 8*; Dario Macome 1/19)  Result: Zimbabwe won by nine wickets ZimCricket
