FILM director and actor Boanerges ‘Captain Zimbabwe’ Chokuda spent two weeks as a homeless man after he was chucked out of the family home when he quit his nursing profession to follow his passion of filmmaking.

Chokuda, who grew up in Kambuzuma, spent two weeks sleeping in Harare’s CBD.

“I am in good books with my father although he chased me away from home.

“I became homeless for two weeks, sleeping in town, and I got an opportunity to meet some people who have a love for the things that I love.

“My father threw me out of the house a month ago and I was homeless until recently when my sister found me a place in Crowhill.

“I need help in making movies.

“My family is not supporting me, they are trying to cut off my communication lines, I am being assisted by the community.”

He added:

“There are some people who are working against me, my family has suppressed my talent.

“They look at art as something that is not good, vaiti ndezvemarombe, they wanted me to go back to nursing.

“With my spiritual beliefs, I realised film is where I belong.

“I thank God for this talent, I am working on a series, I was in the middle of shooting Captain Zimbabwe and my family thought ndopenga, hama dzangu dzichiti ndopenga, ndonhonga zvinhu zvemarara ndichidya.

“They accused me of kupenga but there was no evidence.”

He said he did not enjoy nursing.

“I served as a nurse in Chiredzi at Chipiwa Clinic from 2018 to 2021 and I did filming in my free time and opened a YouTube channel and movie production house called ‘BGE Zim movies.’

“In 2018, I started publishing my movies, including the ones called John Christian, Shamiso, Zimbabwe Bad Boys for Life and more.

“Then Covid came and in 2021, I resigned from nursing and started doing filmmaking full-time and my art life was improving as most of my work gained recognition on ZBC, 3ktv, ZiFM, H-Metro, Kenako Records, and other platforms.

“My movies preached the word of God and I managed to carve a niche in the arts industry.

“My following grew and I also got the support of my fans.

“I was named Captain Zimbabwe after coming up with a movie that had visual effects which were close to Hollywood, it was through the support of my fans and the community.”
