THE European Union Film Festival Zimbabwe will this year expand and will have more audiences in four cities including Harare, Kadoma, Gweru, and Bulawayo.

The festival got underway yesterday at Mbare Art Space and will run until October 28.

Running under the theme, “Beyond Boundaries: Empowering Women Through Film,” the festival seeks to reflect on the European Union’s commitment to promoting gender equality, through the arts.

At least, 27 African and European films curated under Filamu Shorts as well as four Art21 Documentaries, are set to be featured during this year’s event.

“This year’s festival celebrates not only European cinema but also African and Zimbabwean storytellers.

“Our films serve as a universal language, breaking boundaries and uniting people through shared stories,” said festival curator, Roberta Wagner

Wagner said they are giving priority to true Zimbabwean storytellers.

“Admission to the festival is free and open to members of the public who we expect to take part in discussions.

“We are also prioritising true Zimbabwean storytellers who we are encouraging to utilise the platform,” she said.

Kadoma will host the festival at Campbell Theatre while film enthusiasts in Gweru will converge at the Memorial Library.

The festival will head to Bulawayo’s Ster Kinekor from October 18 to 20.

The official opening ceremony has been slated for Mbare tomorrow where winners in six categories, including Best Actor and Best Actress, will be announced.

Organisers have also included surprise local artists who will perform at the event, which is free of charge.

The festival closes with the screening of the critically-acclaimed South African neo-Western, “Five Fingers for Marseilles,” directed by Michael Matthews.

The Euro Film Fest Zimbabwe promises to engage audiences with powerful narratives during scheduled workshops and discussions lined up across the four cities.
