LOGART, CHIDZIVO WIN CITY HALF MARATHON

KENYA’S Isaac Logart and Fortunate Chidzivo won the second edition of the Sunshine City Half Marathon, which finished at the Harare Gardens yesterday.

Logart, who was running under the Mr Pace Athletics Club, touched the ribbon in 1 hour 13 minutes and 25 seconds. He beat Kelvin Pangiso of ZPCS who finished in 1 hour 13 minutes 42 seconds in the 21km race.

Godwin Katakura settled for third place, crossing the finish line, 59 seconds behind Pangiso.

Tawanda Bvunzawabya was fourth in 1 hour 14 minutes 48 seconds while Elijah Mabhunu was fifth.

The first five places carried monetary prices. In the women’s section, Chidzivo, also of Mr Pace, produced a dominant display, touching the ribbon in 1 hour 30 minutes 33 second.

She was more than two minutes ahead of Rudo Mhonderwa who clocked 1 hour 33 minutes 48 seconds, in second place.  Anne Chirisa of ZRP Bulawayo was third in 1 hour 34 minutes 26 seconds.

Others took part in the 10 km run while others took part in the 5km walk/run and wheelchair racing.

Harare City Council organised the event in partnership with the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said:

“Last year it was a learning curve and we are happy that we have seen an improvement in terms of numbers.

“Last year we had 61 athletes and this year we had close to 400 athletes.

“At Harare City we are aligned to sustainability and the UN SDG number 3 which is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

“This second edition of the Half Marathon is one of our ways of contributing towards a healthy nation and increased productivity.”
