PREMIERSHIP football will return to Kwekwe next season for the first time since 2008.

Kwekwe United’s impressive 2-0 win over Chapungu in a ZIFA Central Region Soccer League match on Sunday provided the guarantee that there will be top-flight league football in Kwekwe next year.

Either Kwekwe United or Tongogara will secure the ticket and both are based in Kwekwe.

Elton Njini scored a first half brace to secure the points in what appeared to be the toughest fixture for Kwekwe United in the title run-in.

The victory meant that the Airforce of Zimbabwe side are now effectively out of the running for promotion into the Premier Soccer League.

Chapungu are in third spot on the table with 51 points.

They trail leaders Kwekwe United by 14 points with just three rounds of matches to go.

This leaves Kwekwe United and city rivals Tongogara in a two-horse race for the sole ticket to promotion.

Kwekwe United coach, Prince Matore, paid tribute to the support his side has received from the Kwekwe community this season.

“Since we assumed top position, the supporters have been rallying behind us, it’s good for us but what is important for us is to remain focused,” said Matore.

“They (supporters) have to keep praying for us, there are no easy games.

“We will play Gokwe North, Black Eagles, FC Platinum U-19, we are not yet there.

“This is a marathon and we have to fight to the end.”

The former Chicken Inn gaffer added:

“We are happy that we won, we were worried about the Chapungu game because they are  one of the two sides that beat us in the first round.”

Second placed Tongogara edged Bishopstone 1-0 at the Battlefields grounds to stay within touching distance of the log leaders.

Willard Bembenene’s solitary strike kept Tongogara’s hopes alive. The army side are three points behind Kwekwe United with 62 points and they also have a game in hand.
