SPORTS, Recreation, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister, Emily Jesaya, yesterday donated sports jerseys and 350 balls in the fight against drug abuse.
She is passionate about promoting sports development in Zimbabwe and donated soccer jerseys, netball jerseys and pool tables.
She was speaking at Chisangano School, Maware, where the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Tino Machahaire, launched the US$10 000 TinMac Foundation Tournament.
The tournament, an anti-drugs campaign initiative targeting youths, will see teams competing in various disciplines including football, netball, pool and volleyball.
“It’s an honour to be here at this event. I really appreciate your love and support,” Dep Min Jesaya said.
“However, we can’t just be coming here and thanking you all the time without giving back to the community
“Honourable Tino came up with a great initiative to reduce the number of youths that are on the street and doing drugs.
“As the Ministry, we also felt the need to pitch in and help reduce the number of young people doing drugs by giving them an opportunity to follow their sports passion.
“Be it netball, soccer or pool we are here to support and provide you with equipment.”
She highlighted the Government’s plans to ensure the continued development of sport, particularly in rural areas.
“I am happy with the future of sport, especially looking at cricket. This was a very important tournament because it goes all the way down to promoting grassroots sports development.
“So, I’m very happy with the collaboration that is there.
“As the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, we work together with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education as that is where most of these juniors are found,” she said.
