FORMER inmate Philip Gwaka, whose journey from a 16-year prison sentence to the stage is nothing short of inspirational, is set to release his album, “Gin Ginde” on November 30 at Chikurubi Damview.
He is the leader of his band Restoration Crew.
The album features five songs meant to inspire and offer hope, particularly to those who feel they have lost their way.
Gwaka, who served time at Chikurubi Prison, believes the music has an authentic connection with the struggles and pain faced by many.
In an interview with H-Metro Gwaka said:
“I am happy to be releasing this album at Chikurubi Damview considering the fact that this is where my fan base is.
“I started this music thing in prison and most of my songs resonate with these people because we share the same pain,” he said.
While in prison, Gwaka found solace in music, a transformative experience that not only gave him peace of mind but also shaped his future.
“Prison was tough but I learned a valuable skill that I will treasure for the rest of my life,” he said.
Despite the struggles he faced after his release, including difficulties in securing sponsorship for his music, he remains determined to share his story with the world.
“I have tried countless times to launch albums but it has not been easy to get sponsorship.
“I was supposed to record six songs but due to lack of funds I managed to record five.
“The release of this album has been made possible by the support of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS).
“I am grateful to ZPCS for shaping me into the person I am today.”
He also acknowledged the support he has received from fellow musicians.
“Kenny Chitsvatsva, a member of the legendary Bhundu Boys, has been helping me to get on my feet since I was released from prison and he also helped me in the recording process of this upcoming album.
“I urge people to come in their numbers and support me,” he said.
