HOLLYWOOD actress Danai Gurira, in collaboration with Almasi Collaborative Arts, is set to present ‘Family Riots,’ a play by Gideon Jeph Wabvuta, at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe next month.
Directed by Lucie Tiberghien from the United States and Makomborero Theresa Muchemwa, the play will premiere from November 15 to 24.
Under the guidance of Gurira, Almasi’s aim is to bring the African narrative onto the global stage.
‘Family Riots’ will feature Zimbabwean actors.
The story follows the lives of Sidney and Primrose, a young couple in Mbare whose relationship faces trials of financial hardships, capturing the challenges of Zimbabwean family life during the late 1990s.
Gurira said the Almasi Arts Artistic Director has worked hard to promote African artists.
“A core purpose for me is to bring the African narrative to the global stage. Over the last 13 years, we at Almasi Arts in Zimbabwe have worked tirelessly to bring education, opportunity and access to African artists.
“We are excited to enter a phase in our growth where we put all our pedagogy to practice through unique, innovative play productions.
“Thrilled to announce the first of many such productions.
“Happening in Zimbabwe this November, Gideon Wabvuta’s ‘Family Riots,’” she wrote on her Instagram.
Wabvuta earned a Master’s in Dramatic Writing through the Walter Mparutsa Fellowship.
The play was showcased at the New Works Two Festival in Southern California.
In a statement, those behind the play say it offers a provoking interrogation on the human condition in a rapidly changing society.
The play taps into the nostalgia of everyday Zimbabwean life in that era, blending reflection with a deep sense of familiarity for those who lived through it.
Gurira is an award-winning playwright and actress who starred in the Walking Dead and Black Panther.
Her groundbreaking Tony Award winning play on Broadway ‘Eclipsed’, and others works, demonstrates her commitment to amplifying untold African stories.
